Sustainability as a competitive differentiator in the cosmetic industry

Sustainability is, more than ever, an important element for the Cosmetic industry. Cosmetics are becoming minimalist, many are in solid form and with a high content of ingredients of natural origin.

Cosmetics formulations are being changed in search of more performance with fewer ingredients and preferably from a renewable source.

Knowledge is increasingly accessible to all and the cosmetics consumer is more attentive to the label and to what the company practices in its actions. More than ever, daily practice must be aligned with speech.

Small brands are emerging every day and gaining space, so-called indie brandies, mostly founded by women, follow in growth with products very aligned with this new consumer. The majority of these brands have outsourced production and follow the principles of natural cosmetics, defined by ISO 16128 and guidelines from cosmetic certifiers natural and organic.

The theme of sustainability remains on the rise and is now encompassed by the acronym ESG(environmental, social, and governance) which corresponds to environmental practices, and governance of an organization as described by the Global Compact.

Sustainable practices are certainly directly related to the source of raw materials and their renewable characteristics, but they must also consider sustainability in human and business relationships.

A great example of sustainability is the Guabiroba project that we are running in Irati/PR, Brazil. Using a public notice of productive chaining we are opening the doors to fruits from the Atlantic Forest, Campomanesia xanthocarpa. This fruit has big potential in the food and cosmetics areas with the development of liquid and solid plant extracts rich in vitamin C and flavonoids.

The Yerba mate is another species of Brazilian biodiversity that has gained prominence in the cosmetic area in recent years. We were awarded first place at the International Sustainable Beauty Awards in the Sustainable Ingredient category. In 2022 already we had reports of our work in Globo Rural and Caminhos do Campo by RPC in the State of Paraná.

We are experiencing difficult times with the pandemic. Many small businesses ended up closing and others saw their operations increase in the search for healthier and less aggressive products for the environment.

Quality of life has been placed first and many people are reviewing their homes and their relationship with work, making choices that focus on their physical and mental health. The moment is one of reflection and an excellent opportunity for natural and organic cosmetics produced from renewable and sustainable resources.

With this, we believe that the cosmetics industry will continue to grow with actions that value the assets of native species and especially local and extractive farmers, these are the great protagonists, to whom we owe all our affection and respect.
